The single biggest cause of a wrong-fit implement order isn't horsepower — it's not checking the three-point hitch category, PTO speed, and hitch pin spacing before ordering. Here's what to check on your tractor before you buy.
1. Three-point hitch category
Three-point hitches are grouped into categories (Cat 0, 1, 2 and 3) based on the size and lifting capacity of the tractor:
- Category 0 — garden and sub-compact tractors, roughly under 20HP
- Category 1 — the most common category for compact and lifestyle block tractors, roughly 20–45HP
- Category 2 — utility and mid-size tractors, roughly 45–120HP
- Category 3 — larger farm tractors, generally 120HP and up
Most compatibility issues we see come from ordering an implement built for the wrong hitch category, so this is the first thing to confirm. Some tractors use a dual Category 1–2 linkage — check your tractor's manual or measure the lower link pin spacing to be sure.
2. PTO horsepower, not engine horsepower
Implements are rated by the power actually delivered at the PTO shaft, which is typically 1 to 5 HP less than your tractor's advertised engine horsepower, due to transmission losses. When comparing an implement's HP rating to your tractor, use your tractor's PTO horsepower figure (usually in the operator's manual), not the engine spec on the brochure.
As a rule of thumb, keep 10 to 15% PTO power in reserve under heavy conditions rather than buying right at the implement's maximum rating.
3. PTO speed
Tractor PTO shafts run at one of two standard speeds: 540 RPM or 1000 RPM. Running an implement at the wrong PTO speed, or with mismatched spline counts on the PTO shaft, can cause serious damage to gearboxes and driveline components. Confirm your tractor's PTO speed and spline count before ordering an implement, particularly for PTO-driven gear like flail mowers, post hole borers, wood chippers and log splitters.
4. Hydraulic system type
If the implement you're considering needs hydraulic power (a hydraulic side-shift flail mower, for example), check whether your tractor has an open-centre or closed-centre hydraulic system, and how many remote outlets are available.
5. Rear wheelbase and clearance
For wider implements — grader blades, box blades, rotary hoes — check your tractor's rear wheelbase width against the implement's working width so the tyres aren't running in the freshly worked ground on one side.

- PTO speed (540 or 1000 RPM) and spline count
- Hydraulic system type and available remotes, if relevant
- Rear wheelbase width, for wide implements
